Keeping a log of how much time I'm spending working on which things was my first really good idea in a while, as far as my business goes-- and one that I am happy to share the results of.

Actually, on the web lately-- in various fora and also, in the media in general...I've heard lots of chatter about how many profiles people have to have to keep up with things these days.

This rings true for me. I realized, much of my day is spent updating various websites...uploading to all my different homes on the web...and in general trying to update all of my images, banners, avatars...on all of the pages I use to promote my products.

so...i'm gonna downsize. my admin and page maintenance is taking way too much time away from when i could be designing. i've been thinking about just *how* is best to do it, and i think i'm almost there. but, i want the solution to be something that preserves the ability for me to be current in my community, and as i do in spiralbound_, make sure i'm blogging about art and design i love... i certainly don't want my solution to be something that makes my content suffer. so. maybe not downsizing. just optimizing. integrating.

So...I did a little (traumatic) experiment yesterday with myspace and facebook. I have to say...those sites are hideous to look at! Ok, although facebook did have some redeeming qualities, MySpace gave me a migraine.

Anyway...I looked further into things and decided to go onto VIRB. What I really liked about it was that it was a bit easier to customize...with a little experimenting, I was able to get a page I liked up and running. Now, to make some friends.

The site is mainly for musicians, but, I'm seeing a bunch of designers and illustrators who are also representing themselves up there. So...not long now, I'm hoping the etsy community starts frequenting more often.

If you're curious, take a peek at my page. I set it up today, since it was raining and there was not much else doing.

Under Wraps

I am having lots of fun trying to coalesce the jewelry and the paper into one solid look and feel...who knows where this will lead. But, I got a warm, fuzzy feeling when I uploaded this photo of the sl* packaging, yesterday. Obviously...try as I might, I can't escape the simple beauty of a well-curated selection of materials...twine, newsprint....ahh...their very presence on my desk makes me feel more connected.

I've been thinking about combining my blogs...into one single blog-- which hopefully can be better organized. Right now, things seem a bit fractured and this is probably due to the limitations of blogspot/blogger...

In other news, I continue to bid my paper jobs out for small-run production...and a wonderfully hopeful bit of news today...I think I've met a great, super eco friendly print shop in Brooklyn to help me finesse my job...so, that is truly exciting for me. Soon, I'll be able to give details on that, I hope.

Sigh... I'm keeping so much under wraps...and as I get closer to relaunching, it's really tough to feel that I'm not sharing...I feel very guilty and selfish. Still, knowing I'm going to come out on the other side and be able to show new (and hopefully groundbreaking) paper work is really keeping me going.

As SusyJack*s business grows, it's been pretty exciting for me to try and hang on to those tenets I had when I started...simple design...clear communication...and trying not to get too cute. Focusing on lively, invigorating colors and taking a fresh perspective on what paper can be. I'm hoping I don't disappoint in the coming days.

Also...I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll soon be doing some creative work for Korn Design the incredible Boston and NYC studio that gave me my start in the design world...and what a start it was. So...things keep bubbling away.

I really, really wish I could say these were just listed, because they were! But, as soon as they were listed, away they went. Someone snatched them up. I will see if I can find more of these lovely copper filigree shapes, but no guarantees. I am really surprised at how well susyluxe* is doing so far...but it makes me so happy to think of people out there enjoying accessories I have made.

Anyway...in SusyJack* land, I am fixing up some new patterns, which I hope to share soon. Also, getting to work on some art wall tiles. I hope to have them partially ready this weekend, and ready for upload in the SusyJack* etsy shop.

I haven't really been too active online lately...but, I've been very active in reality. Working on new designs, coordinating production of some of the items which will be launched at the show, and revamping the website to be more true to my vision of what SusyJack* is all about. It's exciting...and hopefully soon I will be able to share it.

So...many people have expressed curiosity about my workspace, and to tell the truth, I am...rather....reticent to reveal the squalor which I call a studio. I know that 'great ways to perfect your office' and 'cute workspaces' are all the rage right now...and there are some beautiful ideas flying about the blogosphere...but let's be honest....I can't get anything done without making a mess....so, perfection is just not practical for me.

Give me space, paper, ink, and I'll make something happen. Pretty organizers and sensible shelving are something I can't even aspire to. Still, all I need to do is look out the window to remember, I've got the best office in the world, the lady New York.

I really want to express my thanks to those who took the time to comment on my post a few days ago, the post called My Compass which I penned on the18th.

Yes, for the past 2 or 3 days, I've been giving pretty serious thought to how I market this lil' company...and I've buried my nose (finally) into some 'how to start a business' books. Truthfully, back in July, when I started really working on SusyJack*, I had not given much thought to where things would go...

It's been really interesting applying all of the skills I would use to help former clients build their brands in my own direction. So far, I'm coming along with some really interesting positioning that I really like.

As a sidenote-- up above, those are new ornella earrings in susyluxe*. When you're making big patterns and lots of graphics all day, it can feel really good to pick up a little pair of pliers and some delicate findings. Change is good.

I'm really happy to announce that the wonderful independent culture magazineVenusZine has run a feature article about SusyJack* in their DIY section! This is pretty great. A couple of weeks ago, I spoke with Amy Strauss, one of their writers, about the company and the past and ongoing inspirations for the designs and the products.

I'm really thrilled with the content of the article. Amy did a great job at picking through all of the details to create a story which really describes the work and what I try to do.

And...I'm not the only one featured on Venus. There are loads of other articles about women, the arts, culture, music, and the indie lifestyle which are worth exploring. I hope you'll head on over to take a peek, and let me know whatcha think.

Hello, everybody... Quite an interesting frame of mind I am in, lately... I haven't been as active online as I usually am, and that is because I am working very hard to bring SusyJack* to the next stage.

All along, sharing my work as it happens has been a really wonderful thing for me. I make something, then, put it up for the world to see...but now, I find myself preparing work that I'm not sharing, and it's strange. I have to admit, it's because I really don't want to reveal what I am bringing to market...or how I am going about developing SusyJack*s identity as a newcomer to the paper world. This is really strange for me, because I am usually so transparent about working. But, I'm finding that business, rather than art, requires a little bit of a different mindset than I am used to.

Of course, there is plenty to come-- but, seeing as there's a big show and launch coming up for me, I'm keeping it under wraps. There will be several designs released before May, but, the majority I think I'll have to keep a secret!

My landscape is shifting a bit, so I'm doing my best to accomodate both selling on etsy and through my own site, as well as working more closely with retailers. They are two different animals, requiring different skills from me. So, switching between those 'gears' is not as smooth as I would like it to be at the moment, but I'm working on it.

Hopefully, in a few weeks, I will have made a good transition.

Anyway, I hope this finds everybody well. Interesting times are ahead.

Yesterday, despite the rain, I managed to get out to the stores on 42nd which sell craft supplies and fabric...so, that was fruitful.

When I got home, I took shots of these ursula earrings which I'm really excited to add to the susyluxe* shop which I hope to stock full of yummy jewelry in the next couple of weeks. There are several designs I've been working on...but I'm also designing the backer cards, and that takes a little time. I'm such a sucker for fun packaging. To me, it's part of the joy of making things.

So...tonight Kurt and I go to see Rufus Wainwright at Radio City for V-Day. I have heard he puts on a great show, so I'm really excited.

In other news...an etsy friend of mine who makes great, screenprinted shirts which are eco-friendly and was also the videographer at etsy for some time, has launched a new blog called Screening Demons which is about all things silkscreen. She interviews talented artists and also waxes poetic on her love of silkscreen printing. Definitely worth a visit! Congratulations, Shan!

Anyway-- I hope everybody has had a happy Valentine's day so far...full of kisses, chocolate, and whatever and whoever it is you love.

A Busy, Snowy Day

A beautiful day today...snowing almost since 11:00, which I love, but rarely see here in NYC.

Today went by really quickly as I tried to shoot some new photos of new work...really have to get more organized about that...I tend to shoot whenever I make something, rather than saving items up and shooting, say, one day a week. It tends to take up a lot of time because my photo set up is...ahem...less than professional (think: diningroom table all overloaded with stuff that I'm trying to turn into props.)

One thing I'd love to do in the very near future is accumulate some really good prop ideas...I would love to build some boards using different textures, and really get into it. Wood, rope, fabric...I should be making a little list of all the ideas. Although I love my colored paper, I need some new life, especially because I'm designing for spring/summer now.

Tomorrow, I'm going to let my mind relax...I have a field trip planned to the bead store so I can create some more earrings...I'm loving having susyluxe* as my second shop...already, I can see how doing a little jewelry design is influencing my pattern design.

Ok. Hopefully my big surprised comes in the mail today...so excited. Fingers crossed, I'll have a new tool to blog about tomorrow.

Nothing makes me happier than a wonderful day in my studio...when something seems to be going right, and the I make a little 'breakthrough'. Usually, this is sort of how it works...I work really really hard to push through all of the other items I've seen and accumulated in my mind, to try and put down what I *really* want to design.

I feel like I really got back there, today. I've got a few motifs that I'm really excited about...they feel new to me, but also like they are very much in the style I've been trying to develop. I can't wait to work a bit more on them, but for now...it's off to the post office.

It's freezing here today, so I hope I make it back here without frostbite.

Filling up the susyluxe* shop bit by itty bitty bit. Anyway...it's fun, and taking my mind off of all the stuff I've got to do to keep up with SusyJack*... it's always nice to have a diversion.

There's a very light, pretty snow falling here in NYC at the moment. It's just so beautiful. I am back in the studio after a little time away, and it feels pretty good. I'm catching up on orders, and most of them will be going out tomorrow.

I know I've said this before, but I really love my postal scale.
It's right up there with my stapler, my holepunch, and my ruler. I can't live without it. I'd definitely recommend getting one for anyone who would like to speed up their shipping. Combined with PayPal's multiorder shipping, it makes neat work of preparing packages.

Plus...it's somehow REALLY satisfying to see all the little packages...with their little official-looking barcodes...ready to go.

More paper goods on the way...I'm not going to reveal them til they are ready, though. mmm....secrets!

Hello! There is much brewing this week...and I have been very busy. But, unfortunately, I am away, visiting family and not in my workroom in NYC. I'll be back in action on Saturday. Still, I have managed to get at least a little bit done, like researching what I would like to do for my stationery booth, emailing a few old friends (who I hope are still speaking to me since it's been WAY too long)... figuring out what to get two wonderful old friends for their brand new, beautiful babies...if anyone has good recommendations, let me know. Something for a new boy, and a new girl...and hopefully handmade. : )

Also, I'm really excited to start in and use some of the newest pattern designs. I'm really liking where they are going. When I get back to NY, I'll be busting out the camera, and taking lots of pics of the newest items...so, I'm excited for that! More soon...And many other things...one nice surprise which hopefully I will post about here, soon!

I'm really enjoying applying the patterns and shapes to the new Wall Art format. As a former painter *and* graphic designer, it really brings me back to be able to see things I'm making actually hanging up...I don't know...guess it's a sentimental thing.

So...I'm experimenting with a few ideas for custom combinations of tiles, and I'm loving the idea of letters...I can see doing a great combination for a name, a phrase...even a wall with a poem on it. This is the first sketch for the idea, and I'll be working on more.

In other news...I have begun to post some of my jewelry in a separate shop on Etsy. This is sort of an experiment...I'm not sure whether susyluxe* will work best in it's own store or under the SusyJack* store...but, we'll see. I'm trying it out. In other selling venues, like Supermarket I will be combining the items in a single shop. My focus is still on paper goods, but anyone who reads my other blog spiralbound_ knows...I have a really, really huge penchant for jewelry....sigh. Probably because I can't afford clothes, I have to supplement with accessories!!!

...or, maybe it's because I used to work in a bead store....

Discount Codes, Sample Sales, and the Future.

*ok, here's an update...I messed up the new site this morning, but It's back up, now. oops!*

Hello all...

Well, as you can probably see (at least, I hope you can see)...things have been in upheaval here in SusyJack* webland. Anyway, the blog header is the *least* of the changes...there are others, as well...Good ones! Promise!

Anyway, here's the background...as some of you might know, I had designed, coded and updated the SJ* website all on my own and it was quite a task...taking me away from designing, promoting, and otherwise nurturing the growth of my company...primarily, it was really hard to add new items to my own site.

What ended up happening was that I would add new items to my Etsy store, but my own web presence (independent of Etsy) was languishing...and it was becoming *really* hard to keep up with updating.

I love Etsy...and Etsy is the place where I have met so many friends and contacts, and I so value it for the community aspect. However, as a growing business, it just wasn't meeting certain needs. For example, the ability to arrange my items, the ability to offer discount codes, or the ability to customize the page.

Enter BigCartel. I was on trunkt and complaining in the forums about the fact that I couldn't order my Etsy store, and therefore, people arriving from trunkt were having a heck of a time actually *finding* the items they were looking for among my products. Trunkt recommended I try Supermarket(an awesome curated site where I'm already selling)..or BigCartel (which I'd never heard of). Well, thankfully, I'm a curious sort, so I went to BigCartel. I'm so glad I did.

This is the bridge I've been looking for...an easy format that I can link to my own site, and easily update with product, saving me time that would have been spent coding all the item detail pages and pricing info on the previous version of the SusyJack* site.

So...onward and upwards. It's a little bit of a different experience to enter the shopping area of my site, now...but it is BETTER. Soon, I will fully integrate my new boutique with my site...so, you won't see the /bigcartel.com in the address.

Now, I can offer discount codes, have categories, product search, sizing or color options, organize my products, track sales, and get stats for page views and referrers...not to mention have a groovy sample sale! And, the price is more than manageable.

Ok, that's it, my buttercups. As you can tell, I am really excited and happy, and although I am still adding product so there are not many in there at the moment, but, I hope you will all stop in and take a peek, and let me know what you think. xx Susy

In Bloom

As I begin the great schlep forward into designing the new collection, I am also making sure to add a few new products into the line that can be updated with new patterns as they emerge. Here is one of them, just added on Etsy...and there will be more to come, because the idea is to mix and match!

The deluxe calendar and the mini-calendar were really successful for me (which I am glad of, because they were pretty demanding to make...as some of you readers may remember!) And one of the things I found about the calendar was that customers were really enthusiastic about being able to hang up the pieces. I had many questions from various customers about prints, and their availablity, so I decided to move forward with the wall panels I'd been exploring.

These wall panels are really fun to make, and I love their simplicity. Personally, I think they are a great way to introduce art into a space without making an intense declaration...for me, these walk the line between decoration and art in a really nice way. I wanted them to be something one could buy for themselves, or give as a gift, and I think that's been achieved.

As a longtime abstract artist, one of the things I try to do with my designs is make the shapes I make really accessible...so that each viewer can find their own meaning within them. The goal for me is to introduce a feeling...hopefully a positive one...in the most simple, uncomplicated way that I can. I sort of think of the designs I create as meditations. I think that really shows through, and I'm pretty proud of that!

Anyway, I'm sorry to make this post a shameless self-critique, but I guess I'm feeling introspective today!

Inspired by the city. Spent the day in the West Village on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed myself...went on a tour of Murray's Cheese Shop caves...incredible. We bought a blue and a bottle of Spanish Rioja and had homemade Moroccan food for dinner...all in all, an inspiring day.

Anyhow...I'm loving these, they are really fun to make, and great to use, too. These jumbo clips not only satisfy my love of pattern, but they also feed my unstoppable lust for office supplies. Yes, that's what I said. Unstoppable Lust.

Anyone who knows me knows that I will walk into Staples or similar stores and spend at least an hour wandering the aisles like a crazycake. Slowly, slowly...mentally cataloging the entire inventory. Classic, functional items like these always pop out...in a few weeks, I wake up at 3 AM knowing what I want to use them for.

Sometimes, I trace my love of office supplies back to my childhood...my dad was an engineer, and you should have seen some of the incredible office thingys he would bring home...I could not believe that such cool items were so readily available.

Lucky for me, they still are.

Today, I sat down to work on some new ideas...it was a very welcome rest...I have been doing production for almost 6 weeks solid...and, although it takes a while to re-acclimate to the artistic side of things, I feel like I at least hit upon a couple of designs that interest me further.

Tonight we go out for German Food. I have no idea what's involved in this...but I *hope* it's beer and some sort of sausage covered in pastry or dough. Seems likely. Yum! Tomorrow, I will probably have trouble reaching my toes.

And this weekend, we're going on a tour of Murray's Cheese Shop in the West Village, and I can't wait! I don't know if there will be much inspiration for patterns there...but perhaps...

Almost...But Not Quite...

I'm not a perfectionist...really far from it.

One day, when I was freelancing, I inteviewed at the Blue Q...I didn't get work from them...but, anyway...I noticed they had something really interesting on their business cards: "A good idea today is better than a perfect idea tomorrow."

And I thought to myself...if these people-- who are responsible for so many fun ideas-- think this, then I'm going to try thinking it too. And to this day, it's been helpful.

Anyway, it doesn't mean that I'm going to be listing *this* notebook up here anytime soon. It's just not there. I could do better. But, it does show a new binding that I'm working with...I want to keep the notebooks really flat and uninterrupted. I like the way each notebook reads as a canvas...but, cutting notebooks is really hard on my hands...so, it's kind of a must that I change the design in order to save my mittens. This is just a dummy, somthing I'm trying out.

Anyway, that's news. A huge thanks to all who took the time to comfort me this weekend (see my insecure little post below). You guys are the best. Absolutely!

I feel better today...I think I was just really stressed. Writing about a doubt is not something I'd ever done in my blogging life...but, I'm glad I did.

Oh, I almost forgot. To your right ----> is a little poll I put into my blog. If you have a sec, let me know how you found me. I wish Etsy would put some sort of field so that sellers could better harvest this info. It's really invaluable...especially when you don't have many advertising outlets, and it helps one to know how to best use their PR energy!

Be careful what you wish for...

Well, this about says it all...
I don't usually post about my doubts on my blog...but, at this point, I think I have the January Lulls. This is actually the first time I've ever posted a doubt on either of my blogs.

Here's the issue: help me if you can. Since November, I've enjoyed a period of growth with SusyJack*. Things have been great. But...also, since November, I've been running a promotion with Free Shipping, which ended on the 10th.

Am I paranoid, or does the fact that no etsy sales were made since the evening of the 9th have anything to do with this? Should I try to reinstate some sort of lower-cost shipping now? Sigh. I'm kind of worried. I'm worried that people only buy the items because the shipping is free. Yes, I realize I sound paranoid. But, I guess when you're new in business, this happens. Basically, I'm sitting here typing and hoping that seeing my fears typed out will help me to see that they are not really founded in much.

But...time will tell. The postal service is pricey. My credit card statement for Nov thru Jan 10th testify to that. Also, I want to be able to keep providing my customers with a tracking number/email confirmation for their purchases. Unfortunately, that amount is too much for me to swing...If I was selling things that over 40 dollars...well, I'd always have free shipping. But, for the type of items I offer, it's just not feasible as a constant thing.

Ok. Chime in here, if you have any thoughts for me! I won't ask again....well...maybe sometime again, when I'm freaking out...which might be....next week? no, tomorrow!

What I like about them is that they can turn anything into a valentine-- even a piece of white paper with a heart drawn on it becomes something really special when it's clipped with one of these.

In other news...my hands hurt. I've been filling lots of orders, and have been really busy this week! I'm beginning to think maybe I need to change my methods so I don't give myself arthritis by next week.

So...that is really important...and I'll be thinking about it. It may mean changing the way the journals are bound, something I've been thinking about, anyway...but, we'll see!

I had to design a Valentine's Card! I just had to. And it got me thinking that, y'know...we're all really lucky that 'love' is a short word. It is just a beautiful word, in print, and in definition.

So...details: this card comes in a set of 4...and yes, those corners are round!

In other news, I'm going to be filling a wholesale order at openhouse. If you haven't been there, go right now! Katie and Megan stock some really wonderful contemporary items...and I am proud to say, I'll be their first in the paper category!...So, I'm really thrilled about that.

Also, I received my contract for the NY Stationery show on Friday and held it in my hot little (shaky) hands today. Yes, I'll be attending. First, I went on etsy to see if anyone had advice, and the forums came through for me...now, although I am still pretty anxious about it, I don't feel like doing the show is a ridiculous move. I'm pretty excited, actually!

These are freshly designed. One of the things I'm going to do in January is stock up theEtsy store with little treats like the ones you see above. They're really fun to make, and I like the idea of offering some items that can be used in multiple ways, like scrapbooking, gift-wrapping etc. The Scrapper's Batch has been really popular, and personally, I love to think of items I make being used by other creatives! So...that's to come!

These cards have a needlepoint-inspired design that accents the border...like little cross-stitches, which I'm getting really into lately.

In other news...I love my little postal scale!! It fills me with an odd, nerdly joy when I see my officially labeled and bar-coded packages ready to go. And, I like being able to know they've been delivered.

I do hope everyone had great Holidays and New Years.

Personally, I know that the new year is one of my favorite times. I love that everything calms down and people seem to get back to business. Trust me, being that I run my own business, and it's been my main focus most days since it began, I really get thrown off when there are a few days when most people are not around...and there's not a peep...and I'm forced to take time off. This year one of my resolutions is to be better at picking up my cell phone. It's basically a glorified answering machine. But, I will try to pick it up. Promise.

Well, my time off was wonderful, though. I got to finally see the tree at Rock Ctr. (from a distance, there were lots of tourists) and went back to Boston for a little bit to visit my family and pick up some clothing I'd left there. I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe. Yes, it all smells like mothballs, but I'm working on that.

I have a new blogger header...which I think looks a little too bright for my liking, but I'm gonna leave it up and see if tomorrow, with fresh eyes, it looks any better....in other new developments, I've bought a huge new cutting board and a brand new shiny Postal Scale!! Sooo...now packages can be tracked and delivery confirmed much more easily. Also...I can keep neater records.

Hello all! I hope you are all enjoying the end of 2007 and looking forward to 2008 and the surprises it will undoubtedly bring. I'm uploading some images in this post...just some patterns I'm particularly fond of. They are big enough to use as a desktop screensaver...so click, save and enjoy!

This has been a really incredible year for me, for so many reasons. I am home now in Boston visiting my family, and have some time to reflect. I'm thankful for all of my friends, family and loved ones who have made this year so special for me. Their support and encouragement has been incredibly edifying.

I'm really inspired and encouraged every day by my creative peers, my great customers...some of whom are new friends...and by the art/craft community in general. I hope we all continue to enjoy ourselves...not losing sight of why we make what we do and why it's so important. love, Susy

Handmade Styling Concepts...

It's funny how sometimes something you design for one purpose accidentally turns into another...

I've been experimenting with some new ideas, as far as products go, and I'm really excited about some of them, although they are not *quite* where I want them to be yet. I'm hoping to introduce a small selection of home decor items...different interpretations of everyday household wares with a clever handmade touch. Behind the necktile in these photos is one idea I'm working on for a bound vase.

I love the way the string (just basic butcher's twine) becomes something completely different, when it's wrapped around the...beer bottle...in this instance; creates almost a faux-thrown look. I'm hoping to get a better bottle, next time...but, this is the basic idea.

For now, though, it's a happy accident that this makes a great texture to put behind a product! I love the way it looks behind the NeckTiles, especially and you'll see more of these wrapped shapes in some of my other photos, too.

The Scrappers Batch. I think that name is hysterical...but hey, that's what these are. Bits of yummy paper and pattern that are meant to be used in new ways.

Another way of making use of extra samples...I hate throwing printed paper away. Actually, I hate throwing most things away. Lately, figuring out how to re-use items in my studio has really been in the front of my mind.

It's mainly trimming that I have lots of extra pieces of...long strips of paper. But sometimes...I end up with sheets that were a little misprinted, or that just didn't get used up completely...and so, I've been saving them up, cutting them up, and creating little giveaways, goodies, and bundles like you see above.

I've always been a believer that if you open your mind to creativity, syncronicity will follow...meaning, that the world begins to read your mind, and show you things that you've been pondering...in a beautiful reality.

I've been meaning to to post these incredible images of artwork and illustration done by Francesca of Birdie, who was kind enough to send a link to these beautiful pieces created with her Dotty Dots.

A while ago, Francesca ordered some dotty dots...and this is what she came up with...her interpretation of the wonderful Parisian film The Red Balloon.

Anyway-- to return to my original point...Synchronicity. The Red Balloon is one of my favorite movies of all time. I used to sneak into the children's library screenings of it...as an adult! So...I found it very wonderful that somehow, somewhere, some way, those dots contained that for both Francesca and me.

So...with most of my, I think all of my, packages, I include something extra. A little gift tag, a bookmark, a clip, a coupon. I like to try out different things, and this is how I use a lot of my scraps and trimmings-- to print up little goodies on.

A while ago, I included a little matchbooklet with a package...and then forgot all about it. Well, the buyer who received it emailed me and asked if that was an item I was going to carry in my shop.

Actually, it was...but, with all the xmas orders, I hadn't had time to make any up...although I had the template ready. So...without further ado, I went to work, making a batch for her. To be honest, they were a very pleasant surprise...I really loved the way they looked, so yummy, all those bright patterns stacked together. So...soon, they will be offered in the store.

Anyway, this is what I love about Etsy, and selling online in general. It's really fun to communicate with buyers. Making custom orders is not something I want to do a ton of...because then I'd never get to design more products! But, when it works out, it can be really great, and what they call in the corporate other-world...a win-win.

A couple of journals are featured on the front page of CUT + PASTE....the handmade consignment shop which, in my humble opinion, was one of the pioneers in craft, handmade, and diy retail. There are lots and lots of amazing gifts over at C+P, so make sure and head on over...Personally, I love the dress in this image. It would look really cute with colored tights and a pair of vintage booties.

In other news...orders are going out for the holidays! I've been very, very busy filling all of them, but I'm on top of it, and having a great time preparing and sending off packages. A couple of new products are in the works, so that's exciting...I can't wait to put them up. Response to the calendar has been really, really great...and I'm thrilled because a great deal of effort went into designing it. I'm thrilled to think that people are looking forward to seeing some of my work all year round. What a compliment.

Ok, soon, I will stop posting about the calendar...but I had to do one...more...because the calendar now comes in a mini size, so I wanted to let people know. It's about 1/2 the size, all other features are the same. Great to hang in a small space, or...separate the pages and hang up a few months at a time.

Sketches and Treasures

Doin' some sketching on Sunday, and this is what I came up with...I found a huge paper supply store in NYC this weekend...so I have some cool new binder rings to play with. Planning on some long books that are hangable...not sure if it will work, but I certainly am excited to explore.

Also, yesterday a nice feature of the calendar on Omiru which is a fun shopping blog. So...that was an extra perk for 'Cyber Monday' as it's now called.

Since I've been under the weather all week, it was put on hold, but today, I finally got the light for the photos and was alert enough to take them. Anyway, I do hope people will enjoy this. It's definitely been a hard process-- harder than I thought it was going to be. But, I'm happy to see it come together.

Love and Headcolds, and Calendar Progress

I may have a stuffy nose, but I will not be stopped! Ok. Yes I will...if there's a Project Runway marathon on...

But anyway...I'm working on filling some orders, taking photos of my new necktile designs, and recovering from the TRAUMA of the bindery and what they did to my precious calendars. Thankfully, I had only brought a sample, rather than a whole bunch of calendars to them because they butchered them. Oh well. So, back to the drawing board on how to actually bind these suckers so they can hang.

Thank heavens for screw posts. In reality, they are the most attractive option...but they require a little more work to change the month. However, I don't think it will be a problem. The pages can easily be torn off, or moved to the back. Plus, the screw posts give a little bit of a high-end industrial feel to the whole affair.

Categorically Speaking

Since the website has been up for a while, I'm finding out what I should change and what is working. So, some changes are on the way...but like everything else...will take a while. I'm pessimistic today. I have a bad cold and I'm just generally mopey because of it.

Calendar Progress

Well, I've had some really wonderful, edifying comments on the calendar, so...I thought I'd post a shot of the progress...I was not happy with the binding job on the samples I brought to the binder, so...today, it's off to try and find another solution. Somehow, a basic spiral binding just doesn't cut it b/c all the pages get uneven when they are folded over. So, today I shall try wire-o...which is a little more reliable as far as neatness. Learning as I go is my modus operandi, in general.

Oh...and here's a pic of a new necktile that I will list shortly. I was at the Japan Society the other night, and they had a speaker talking on a mustard yellow podium. I was so struck by the color that I knew I had to work it into a piece, somehow. I'm really enjoying making these. It's fun to switch up media, and interesting to adapt and work with the patterns and motifs into other shapes and purposes.

If you can cover it in paper, I'm gonna try. That's pretty much what I think about what I'm doing lately. I wake up at night, and dream of covering things in paper. I walk through Home Depot like a mental patient...silently cataloguing anything that can be covered in paper or made into a product...and it feels so GOOD.

A few weeks ago I posted about some pendants I was beginning to experiment with...and now, after a little while of plugging away at it, I've finally put my first one up on Etsy. I'm calling them NeckTiles, because I like that they look like little paper tiles. Each one comes with it's own felt pouch, handmade by yours truly. At first, my pendants looked a little globby and the color wasn't coming the glaze enough. But, I stuck to it, and now I'm quite happy with them. I'm even making my own bases for them, using my trust revlon nail file and a little patience.

I hope you enjoy these. I'll be listing more soon, in different designs and with different pouch colors.

More New: Calendar Progress! I am on my way to the bindery (scary) today with my printed calendars. There will be a large size (about 17" long) and a wee size (about 10" long) for sale shortly. So, I hope the binder doesn't mess em up. Holding breath.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow

I feel a bit like my mom when it comes to this calendar. She has this quilt she's been working on for about 30 years...and it's this family joke that it will never really be finished (actually, we joke that it will be her funeral shroud at the rate she's going) but that's what you do when you come from a family who can't resist the dark humor.

Anyway-- I feel a little like that, because I keep getting *close* to finishing this...but just can't quite make it all the way. I'm a little closer today...the dates are plugged in. But, the artwork needs to be refined a bit...and the color needs work. The cover needs to be done...and, oh...they need to be printed and bound. Right.

Anyway-- I guess I could always put this out for 2009, but I was *SO* hoping to have my first calendar be for this coming year.

But, things are moving along...I'm working on some new ideas...and filling some large orders that have me pretty much paralyzed til I get them done. My mind is racing because once I set into production mode, my mind generally starts to wander into new territory. I hope this finds all of you fine and dandy!

Sets of 3 and new Pencil Cups

Just listed a bundle of 3 journals on etsy...so, you can pick your favorites and get them as a nicely wrapped set. I love the way that patterns look together-- and one of the things I love to do the most is take a bunch of my favorites and start combining them. I thought this was a fun way to get that to happen. A set of 3. Plus, this set is a bit of a deal, since the journals are usually $8.5 each, this works them down to $7.33 each.

Also on the way... PYOP Pencil cups...and Cup o' Clips. Still working on the necklaces. I'm out of goo, so I need to get some more. Believe it or not, I can't find this stuff anywhere in NYC. Frustrating. Mystery Goo.

FYI I have started going to the gym in the morning and I feel like I have 2 additional hours in my day. So nice!

My Pretties...

One thing about trying to make these...it's really hard to do while jumping up and down with glee.

Anyway-- these were just little tests-- They have yet to dry. And they don't have their silver bails yet (that's how they will affix to the necklace). I'm thinking they will be a bit less blobular once the stuff on top dries-- I like the blobby look, though, so I hope they don't lose too much of their roundness.

I ordered some things from various websites yesterday...some crafting supplies in the wearable category. I am SO excited to get them in the mail...but also completely freaked out that what I am planning to make will be a total flop, and only look good in my mind. Still. One must try. And all the medallion shapes I keep drawing need second residences...

For now, it's just me doodling in circles. Seeing where i can take things. I hope you are all having a great week so far. If you ordered from me recently, all of the items will ship out as of tomorrow-- and many shipped out today, so it should be about 3 day til arrival time.

I'm a new member on Trunkt! So...I thought I'd take a couple of minutes just to show off some of the great talent on that site....I made a showcase, which if you're curious, you can view HERE!. I've included some of my longtime faves (Lucie Summers) as well as some new finds.

I also have to say I'm really impressed with Trunkt's commitment to the site. Not only does admin respond really quickly to questions, but they are also really helpful in discussing how to make the most of your portfolio. I had a long train ride back down to Boston to visit my family and friends yesterday, and so, I made use of my time by following some of their advice on my portfolio...so, we will see where that leads.

I love these new clips just added in the SusyJack* online shop. I had so, so much fun making them today, and I just love how they look, and the sparky feeling you get when you read the fortunes on them.

So, yesterday via the very resourceful design blog design muse I came across ReNourish, a really delightful online toolkit for designers looking to produce more eco-friendly work.

Anyway, in light of some recent goings-on here at SusyJack* I wanted to share the resource! There's a great section on smart and sustainable paper choices and a whole bunch more stuff...green blogs, articles, sustainable living info. etc.

I've been working very hard to keep green in mind when designing SJ* products, without worrying that quality will suffer. SusyJack* notebooks are all printed on 100% PC paper, and as often as possible, packaging is pared down to reduce waste. That's one of the driving forces behind SusyJack*...if I was gonna go into the paper biz, I was gonna do it in a way I could live with. Red White and Merry

Last week, I put a couple of other designs up on my flickr acct page for xmas card packs (4 cards to a set) I've been working on and will have up for sale beginning this week. I really had fun designing different cards that are more and less Christmas-y. I particularly like this one because it's more about the season, and the fun of the holidays than anything too particular. It's a great card to give to a coworker, or even as an invite to a party. Of course, it could go to anyone, but I like the fact it is so versatile.

Getting ready for the new year already...so...this illustration is not finished yet (haven't quite gotten to the 2 and the left zero...) but it's coming along. I started it last night while I was working on some xmas cards and just needed a little break.

Things are moving pretty fast. I have another photoshoot planned for this seasons' xmas items-- and of course, plan on adding new things to the shop all the while.

Sold the first Pencil Cup on etsy today, so that is indeed exciting. I am very happy about that. So, I hope this finds everyone well, and painting, drawing, crafting, knitting away this morning.

Scroll Pattern Clips

I've wanted to create some studio clips where the pattern really went with the shape of the clip, for a while now. Here's the first set. These are sold in a sets of 4. Perfect for hanging prints, illustrations...anywhere that 2 or more of a kind are needed. Personally, I love the clean, crisp combination of the white and blue. But...there are more colors on the way. A black and white, and a coral red.

Oh! and I almost forgot-- underneath appears a new product that I'm refining....recycled kraft wrapping paper in the grain pattern. I'm hoping to offer these either as a gift-wrap option, or as a product, on their own!

Bright Pink Twirl Notebook: Just added this morning. This design also comes in a yellow-orange and a bright blue. Normally, I don't wear alot of pink...and I don't decorate with pink...I'm just not a pink person. But, when it comes to drawing, painting and designing, I LOVE it. Strange! Perhaps it's because I wasn't allowed to have Barbies as a kid. I was pink-starved. haha.

Anyway, the image above also shows the type of packaging you can expect to receive your orders in. I love to package up items...I think it's because I used to play 'store' incessantly as a kid. Well, I guess looking back at this post, I'm still very much a kid! xo!

Well, unfortunately *just* as I was hitting my stride, I was called away from my worktable and my designing. While I was able to sketch and dream of things to come, I was sadly not able to do any work with my hands over the break. But...I am back, and trying to put all of the designs I've got completed into reality at the moment.

Also, I got to start in on some new items (xmas, anyone?) and fun stuff for the new year, which will be in development. Scheduled this week...photo-shoot of the fall collection, as well as some work on the almost complete SJ website. In the meantime, CutxPaste has put up some of my products, which I'm really happy about...there are also a bunch of other products worth checking out over there!

Getting Closer!

I have been one busy bee. So...I'm working away on the real SJ website...here it is so far. I'm liking it a lot, but I'm still undecided on the background....which I want to be a photo of some sort, but blurry. It's really important to me that I somehow communicate that the designs are made in a real place, by a real person...and I think that photography is an important part of that. But, it's also important that I present the items in a clean and crisp way...so that people know that I am really committed to the brand, and to the experience.

In all my years as a designer, this was a fundamental part of building anyone's brand...to communicate in the way that they felt most comfortable with, and that best reached their audience. It's really exciting to be doing it for myself, now. There are no rules, and no standards...and I have to be careful not to be too much of a perfectionist! But, luckily, I tend to be a *little* impatient, so my rule is that I throw things out there when I think they are 'good enough' and then correct as I go...with what customers tell me, or with what I find out myself.

I feel like I've been out of touch for so long...My last entry was the 16th! Truth is, things have been hectic, and I'm just starting to come up for air. Orders have all made it out on time, though, and I'm hanging in! I hope all of you are doing well, and to those of you who I've had the pleasure of meeting via etsy or this blog, you will hear more from me soon!

Some exciting news today...literally...and I can't say too much because I haven't *seen* it yet..but somewhere, in the Washington Post, is a picture of SusyJack studio clips! So exciting. I'm going out to get the issue today...I can't wait to see it!

An update on the move to NYC...it's complete, so my address has changd from an 021 to an 100...oooh! I'll have more NY news into the fall. It's been interesting trying to manage all of this transition-- from starting a new company, to leaving one city for another, to starting work on a new set of designs while promoting the first collection...I'm looking forward to having a home-base to work from. It will make a big difference!

Here are a couple of new books, soon to be added to the store line-up. I am planning on offering some new colors, like a hot pink and a green, as well. So far, I have the orange and blue all made and ready to go. These are not that big...only 5.25" x 5.625...about the size of a cd case. I'm trying out new designs on smaller-scale books, to save materials, for now. Ones I think work especially well might get bigger!

I did manage to do a little doodling while away...I just brought these in to refine this morning....still working on it...but happy with the vibe of these little explorations, so far. I sort of think the hope idea might be better in blue...but yellow is just so pretty!

Skipping Town

I'll be away at fabulous Lake George with my family and my sweetie this weekend.... August 3 to August 7. Orders that were placed before today (Friday) will be shipped before I leave, today. All other orders will ship when I get back. I'll be able to re-stock the store, and also to email now and then, but I won't be able to make or send products!

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great weekend. I know I can't wait to jump into the water!

Studio Clips Demo

Not that I think people can't figure out how to do this themselves...but...I thought I would share these photos. The cord was made just by braiding string. I decided to make the original studio clips set for myself, because i was totally unenthused about getting a big, heavy bulletin board. This is much nicer, and, I think, helps me switch up what's hanging around much more frequently. And CHANGE IS GOOD!

Working on collection for the fall...Here's a little taste. I like the black and gold combination, and the ornate-meets-basic vibe of this Turkish Journal. it will be interesting to see how the colors change, into a colder season! So far, this is the only little hint of thngs to come in my etsy shop. But, I cannot wait to add more. Lots of orders are going out today, so I have to run and complete them, plus start packing for my move to NYC (which happens on the 15th! Yaaay!) Enjoy your day, all!

Hello Everyone.

Gotta say, when I started SusyJack, I really wasn't sure how it would be received...actually, for several months, I played around with patterns and designs...and I tried so HARD to make them look 'right'. I tried to make them look like other patterns I had seen looked....and yes, it was fun, but it was so exhausting. I felt like the work didn't come from me.

This week, I feel so blessed to have had feedback from individuals who took the time to be supportive of my work, and also to mention what they liked about it... and who would have thought, all the things that they liked are the things that I like!

It's amazing to feel affirmed. And I'm honored that people have begun to order the journals, and some of the other products to have for their own. I almost can't believe it....well, *almost*. I believe in the designs, too....and in their happy shapes, and I try to keep them simple so that people can find their own meaning in them. Now off to fill some orders. It's all so exciting.

Above is a recently listed item...with custom spine patterns. This journal is a little sturdier than the others-- it's pretty thick, with white paper instead of newsprint. We'll see!

STUDIO CLIPS

So...I'm starting to think of display options for the newest addition...and I really like the tin can! I am thinking that it might be nice to add some sort of fun label, with a price/each so that retailers could order a can and a bunch of clips. That is definitely something to think about.

I've been working on a few new orders (very exciting!) and I haven't had much time to start any new designs...but hopefully today, that will happen.

Choose Your Own Adventure!

Soon, soon, I will begin doing business in a *slightly* different way, which centers more on 'pick your pattern' than 'here is the pattern'. I am hoping that this is more fun and flexible for buyers. Of course, designs will still be the same fun and fresh patterns they are now, but there will be more to choose from, and an element of DIY to the orders.

I have several ideas of what I would like to start applying patterns to, so I will probably get to work in the next few days making some of that happen. As I am finding my target audience, it's really interesting to be forming the business plan somewhat at the same time...I'm really enjoying it!

Well, I just wrapped up a big order for a store in Colorado....my first wholesale order, wooo! I hate to say goodbye to these journals....but I know they are on their way to a good home. I would love to keep them around so I could snap a few more pictures of the group of them!

Ok, so I have all these dots from making large-hole gift tags...
now what should I do with them?
Maybe I could practice taking more pictures. The patterns are so pretty that they inspire me to try and learn how to better use my camera!

In other news, I bought some clothespins today, so I hope to be able to try out applying some patterns to them. I would love to have some really cool studio clips to use around here.

I've been thinking that I might post some work that is more experimental on etsy, along with the products that are in the collection. Sort of a ones of a kind thing.... Above is a pattern sketch I was working on today. I love the way that the grain looks under the pattern, when you knock the shapes out of it.

Here it is....the SusyJack blog. This is where I hope to post photos and musings about current projects and items that I have cooking in the studio.
